A feminist TV documentarian examines the content of 70 years  of programming, events and  industry people to better understand how history unfolded. History books have traditionally focused on men and their accomplishments. As we build the canon of women creatives and storytelling focused on women, television archives provide an invaluable foundation for understanding what was broadcast, why it was chosen, its impact and champions.

Cynthia

Becoming a Feminist TV Documentarian

Cynthia loves to tell the story that a few events led up to starting the podcast and they all had to do with explaining 20th century TV stories and examples to Millennials. A life-long viewer and student of pop culture, Cynthia's career was in public relations and communications, and her civic life included election to her hometown's school board and city council. Her mid-career Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership gives her insights into change theory and leadership practices which she occasionally embeds in podcast episodes.

So many episodes of 20th century TV are in fact time capsules of progress - an opportunity to experience the before and after - in what she thinks of as America's home movies. Does it matter that a 1974 Police Woman episode may be the first with a plot to include lesbians? Yes. How about a Quincy, M.E. episode that explained the value a collection of rape evidence (before it was named a kit) could be to police investigations? Fascinating!

When an empty nest created space in her life for a hobby, Advanced TV Herstory ®  was born. Now in Its 11th year, the podcast is officially a pre-teen, which means it will challenge everything by continuing to ask the question why.

Engaging Speaker

Cynthia is an experienced facilitator and speaker, who navigates audience interaction with gentle humor and focus. Her current topics include depiction of White Woman Tears: Sexual Harassment on Television, and Unscripted Courage: Little-known Stories of Famous Women's Grit and Determination.

(Left) Cynthia was an adjunct faculty member at Minnesota State University, Mankato 2014-2016.
