Children’s TV legend Shari Lewis’ reinventions were the subject of a recent episode of Advanced TV Herstory. I enjoyed discussing the compelling documentary Shari and Lambchop with Mallory Lewis and director Lisa D’Apolito (Love, Gilda).  The film chronicles Lewis’ life and her constant reinvention across a variety of roles. Lewis was a TV show host, magician, dancer, singer, actress, author, and even symphony conductor. 

Mallory Lewis explains the vast amount of resources left at the time of her mother’s unexpected passing due to cancer. TV legend Shari Lewis honed her delivery and adapted to broadcast technology to connect with three generations of kids.

Featuring archival footage  and interviews, this documentary uncovers the multifaceted talent of Shari Lewis. D’Apolito explained the importance of showing Lewis’ work as a feminist, philosopher, and TV visionary. Sesame Street’s Megan Piphus Peace provides a generational perspective on Lewis’ enduring influence and creative genius.
