Longtime Betty White fan and host of Advanced TV Herstory, Cynthia Bemis Abrams reviews the legend’s career TV comedy. Working from Betty’s own memoirs, Cynthia recounts Betty’s interest in the budding TV industry and her early roles, which reveal a recognition of inequity and dissatisfaction with the white male hierarchy in television. Highlighting “Life With Elizabeth,” one of the earliest titled woman in a comedy (1953-55), Cynthia observes the early traits of the eventual SueAnn Nivens. Betty’s personal life is as authentic as her now legendary roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls and Hot in Cleveland.
