Annie Potts!

It’s often said, usually when one is debating whether or not to do something, that “you can’t get a hit if you don’t swing.” A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a social media post about Annie Potts and the non-profit organization she and others have started. Having followed Annie’s accounts over the years, I sensed that this was a big step for her – a public and visible permanence for her efforts.

Here’s the “get a hit” part – if a website has a “contact us page,” use it! Long gone are the days of Letters of Introduction. It’s true that in some instances, it’s helpful to know people who know people, but I am finding more and more that people are open to new ideas – maybe your ideas. Receptive of fresh help – you help? Looking to expand their network – are you the bridge?

And a note to people who received inquiries from contact pages, if it’s sincere and legit, the least you can do is send a reply that you received the message. Don’t be what we all dislike about HR departments these days. Silence isn’t golden, it’s rude and disrespectful.

The cure to the loneliness epidemic is to make a connection. In my case, this interview represented a wicked smattering of many past roles I’ve filled: public policy, non-profit governance, fundraising, lifelong TV fan, philanthropist and caregiver.

We simple can’t wait for others to rise to the occasion of compassion and care.
