Veterans Day was approaching, which got me thinking about TV’s women characters in the military. In my November newsletter, I listed TV series that featured women in traditional service. I didn’t recognize my tunnel vision.

Novelist, coach and podcaster Beth Barany reminded me of those I missed. Namely, the TV women characters in the military in space: Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Killjoys (2015-2019). Beth has written on the character Samantha Carter, Air Force astrophysicist in the series Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007).

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media team tracks the power and presence of STEM women on TV. Similarly, Beth spotlights and celebrates TV’s STEM women in science fiction and government work. All of this adds to our collective appreciation and understanding of representation in media.

As a former government employee, I laud Beth’s persistence and creativity. I proudly watched all 246 episodes of Bones, which cast a Washington DC government workforce in competent, smart light! Thanks, Beth, for adding depth to our recognition of TV women characters.
