Iconic Guests and Duets of The Judy Garland Show: Part 4
Iconic guests and duets of The Judy Garland Show are a major part of the series’ legacy.
One of my holiday traditions is classic television. One favorite is the iconic 1963 Christmas special from The Judy Garland Show. It featured duets with Mel Torme, Jack Jones, and her children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft and Joey Luft. I produced 5-part series in 2019 about on The Judy Garland Show’s, including one episode dedicated to the iconic guests and duets with Garland.
Chicago-based Garland scholar Angela Ingersoll and I explore how the 1963-1964 series brought together some of the most influential talents of the era. DVDs showcase Broadway legends like Ethel Merman and Lena Horne to rising stars like Barbra Streisand and Diahann Carroll. The guests and duets became a significant cultural touchstone. Ingersoll and I discuss how Judy’s collaborations with stars lt transcended entertainment, giving a platform to diverse voices in a male-dominated industry. We also explore the pressures Judy faced from CBS executives and how she navigated the challenges of sexism and constant scrutiny.
Judy’s guests fell into three categories: family (her three children), emerging singers and classic Hollywood actors and singers.
The black and white episodes with iconic guests and duets make The Judy Garland Show a one-of-a-kind time capsule. The series’ format was originally variety, with skits and dancing. Judy emphasized the singers, as that’s where her talent was strongest. Singing.
Streisand is now an icon. In 1963, Carroll’s star as an accomplished Black singer/actor was on the rise. Horne was a celebrated singer, dancer, actor and civil rights activist, who was blacklisted from Hollywood. Her appearance on The Judy Garland Show was a big deal.
