Shari Lewis’ Reinventions: A Documentary on Legacy and Talent
Shari Lewis’ reinventions are the subject of a heart-warming and compelling documentary that recently came out. My kids (now in their 30s), loved Shari and her puppets Lambchop, Charlie Horse and Hush Puppy. So it was a joy to discuss the film Shari and Lambchop with Mallory Lewis and director Lisa D’Apolito. In this episode, viewers learn how Shari Lewis’ early life led to her constant reinvention across a variety of roles—TV show host, magician, dancer, singer, actress, author, and even symphony conductor.
Lisa and Mallory explain the sourcing of archival footage and interviews. While Shari’s legacy seems self-evident, this documentary uncovers her work as a feminist, philosopher, and visionary in children’s television. Interview clips with Sesame Street’s Megan Piphus Peace provides a generational perspective on Shari Lewis’ enduring influence and creative genius.
Lisa D’Apolito has appeared on Advanced TV Herstory to discuss another film she directed, this one about SNL alumna, Gilda Radner. Also, in the podcast’s early years, I examined Shari Lewis’ legacy in the context of children’s television.
