Another (Great) Book About Eleanor Roosevelt
Another great) book about Eleanor Roosevelt has arrived. It is definitely worth your time.
The book is Eleanor Roosevelt, Volume 3: The War Years and After, 1939-1962 by Roosevelt author and scholar, Blanche Wiesen Cook
Like many, I powered through the first Wiesen Cook’s two volumes of this series. We all paused for the third to be published, while witnessing contributions and styles of 21st century First Ladies. This isn’t just another great book about Eleanor Roosevelt. Wiesen Cook is a wonderful writer and her research on ER is definitive and extensive. Most importantly, the books have been written and researched with a woman’s curiosity.
The author toiled in some areas of ER’s life more than others. Perhaps unlike so many male biographers, Wiesen Cook uncovered more original source material of ER’s public, private and family experiences. Bottom line, I completed the book feeling inspired and connected to this magnificent woman. For students and readers interested in America’s rise of feminism and activism or the power of systemic racism pre-Civil Rights era, ER is an important woman to understand and study.
In an early podcast episode, I highlighted the television appearances and feminist voices of ER and Betty Ford. They were both outspoken and seemed to connect well with all audiences they encountered. Listen to FLOTUS on TV: Roosevelt and Ford.
