Depth and Impact of Pop Culture

Depth and impact of pop culture is actually an area of study. In March I attended the Pop Culture Association national conference in Chicago. It’s the annual gathering of media and cultural studies folks from around the world. Like an athletic scout, I pay close attention to array of fascinating panels. Panelists and presenters have polished their product and are speaking in public. To be invited onto Advanced TV Herstory requires interesting material AND confident delivery. Beyond that, I troll the exhibition room where publishers promote their wares destined for syllabi, pleasure reading and occasionally this podcast.

PCA President Sherry Ginn agreed to chat for an hour. She provided insights about her work, leading the organization and her path to pop culture (via sci-fi, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and a PhD). As she framed PCA’s vast thematic coverage, I saw the depth and impact of pop culture. The Advanced TV Herstory episode Talking Sci-Fi with a Scientist, was released last week.

One of my goals for Advanced TV Herstory has been to create a fact-based resource for students and scholars. My  membership in the PCA as well as support of the Geena Davis Institute provides me a pipeline of ideas and guests you won’t find on any other podcast.
