Documentarians!

Last year I wrote that I had undertaken writing a book. I recently began collaborating with co-author Mary Trevor, a legal writing professor and author. We wrestled with the topic’s scope and organization, asking academic writers for advice. We agreed on an excellent suggestion to write at least the first two sections as law review articles

Mary taught legal writing for decades at a Minnesota law school. She teaches and models the notion that legalese does the reader no favors. We are working hard to make these law review articles accessible for the regular reader as well as law student. As an editor on scores of legal writing projects (books and articles), Mary has got an eagle eye for detail. All this and she’s a true blue friend to boot!

So here we are, six months later, reviewing every line (and extensive footnote) to prepare our first article for submission later this summer. Last week, as original research, we interviewed a prominent TV writer, Georgia Jeffries. Georgia observed that given our inter-disciplinary exploration of context and original research, we’re in fact feminist documentarians! I later interviewed Georgia for the podcast, discussing her work on Cagney & Lacey and China Beach.

It just goes to show you never know where your interest will take you!
